Storage Insurance

  • All reputable storage facilities require that you have some insurance coverage for your goods while they are in storage.

  • Most storage facilities will offer liability insurance and it is generally included in the rental charge, though this can vary from state to state. Note that this coverage is the very minimum allowable and offers very little protection.

  • Your homeowner’s insurance policy may cover your household goods while they are in storage so check with your insurance company before accepting any additional insurance offered by the storage facility. Make sure you know all the conditions concerning storage in your homeowners policy such as:

    • the level of coverage
    • adding and removing items from your storage space
    • goods in transit to storage
    • goods transported over state lines
    • if the coverage ends when your old home is sold
    • if there is coverage for items packed by you
    • proving that damage or loss is due to:
      • the mover's negligence
      • the truck rental company's negligence
      • the storage facility's negligence

  • Storage facilities that offer extra insurance may require that you accept their insurance coverage. Others will offer you different options with outside insurance companies with competitive rates due to the bulk discount they receive. Only accept coverage that covers the entire value of your belongings.

  • Optional insurance should include adequate coverage for negligent loss or damage to your goods. You will pay extra for coverage against moisture damage and pest damage.

  • Full and self-service movers offer insurance with better protection while your goods are in transit. If you need additional insurance, an insurance company will have better rates if you are using full or self-service movers.

  • If you are renting a truck and driving your goods to the storage facility, you will most likely be working with a trucking company. You will require additional insurance since their insurance is minimal or nonexistent. It is a good idea to add roadside assistance to your coverage.
