Packing Materials

  • Packing Room

In order to avoid confusion and unnecessary clutter, choose a least-used, accessible room on each floor of the house. Pack this room first and then use this space for packed boxes from other rooms. Keep your packing supplies in a basket which you can carry from one room to another.

  • Boxes

Start early to collect different sized boxes from grocery, department and liquor stores. It is often difficult to locate enough sturdy boxes that have lids or flaps that can be taped closed. For a small charge, various containers and boxes can be purchased from the moving company.

  • Felt Tip Markers

Have a good supply of marking pens. In bold writing, clearly label all four sides of each box with the destination room and the contents to avoid the frustration of searching for items. Label appropriate boxes with "fragile" or "this side up".

  • Packing Tape

Purchase heavy-duty packing tape at least 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide. Buying a tape dispenser makes sealing boxes easier. Tape both the bottom and top of the box by making sure that the tape extends at least halfway down each side so it doesn't come loose during moving. Never interleave the flaps of a packing box. Fold down the two short flaps first, then the two long flaps and tape along the open seam and down both sides.

  • Wrapping Materials

If you use newspaper, remember that the items will probably have to be cleaned after unpacking since the ink rubs off. Don't wrap good china or lampshades because the stain can be permanent. Unprinted newspaper can be purchased from moving companies. Foam pellets, bubble wrap, tissue paper, craft paper and shock-resistant corrugated paper can also be used. For extra protection of computer equipment, TV's, DVD's and VCR's, pack them in the original boxes if possible.

  • Sealable Plastic Bags

Picture hooks, screws, handles and knobs can be placed in small plastic bags and taped securely inside of drawers where they can easily be found.

  • Scissors

Purchasing a pair or two of sturdy, inexpensive scissors will ensure that you don't damage your sewing sheers or other expensive specialty scissors.

  • Trash Bags

Have a good supply of trash bags on hand. Keep a couple in each room so items that should be discarded won't get packed.
