Additional Packing Tips

  • Start early, packing areas such as the attic, basement, closet shelves, and garage where the items are not in frequent use.

  • Pack on a room-by-room basis and make sure all cartons are properly sealed and all four sides are labeled with the contents and room destination where they will be unpacked.

  • The heavier the items, the smaller the box should be. Small, heavy articles like books, records and canned goods should be packed in smaller boxes. Bulkier but not-so-heavy articles such as pots, pans, linens, and small kitchen appliances can go in larger boxes. Very bulky, lightweight articles such as blankets, pillows, toys, large lamp shades, and shoes go in the largest boxes.

  • The packed box should weigh no more than 50 pounds and shouldn't rattle when it's moved. Take out items if the box is too full and use paper to fill empty spots because the sides should not bulge and the top should not cave in when closed. Packing correctly protects items from damage.

  • Pack heavier items on the bottom of the box and lighter items on the top.

  • Protect breakable items by cushioning them well and not mixing them in with heavy items.

  • Fragile items should be placed in boxes with extra paper on the bottom and sides for cushioning. Extra protection is possible by boxing them individually before packing. Use "Fragile" and "This End Up" labels.

  • To save yourself the expense of having your garments cleaned and pressed later, consider using moving company wardrobe cartons for hanging clothing such as suits, dresses and coats. Clothing travels best with the garment bags folded and placed in the bottom of the wardrobe carton.

  • Consider purchasing some specialized cartons for items such as mattresses, mirrors, pictures and tall items such as table lamps.

  • Dresser drawers do not need to be empty. Just make sure the drawer contents are not too heavy and all breakable and valuable articles have been removed.

  • Never interleave the flaps of a packing box. Fold down the two short flaps first, then the two long flaps and tape along the open seam and down both sides.
