Investigate potential schools on your pre move trip. The U.S. embassy of your new country can provide a list of schools that are referred to as American schools, follow the traditional U.S. curriculum and provide all instruction in English.

If there are no such schools, be aware that educational terminology varies from country to country as well as education and ability requirements for specific grades. Determining what type of school and grade your child will be in may take some research. Choose a school which meets your child's needs:

language requirements
use of new technology
small class size
wide range of courses offered
well-qualified teaching staff
good accreditation rates
student University placements
sports and recreation

Because changing schools can be an unsettling experience for some children, it is advisable to allow your child to finish the year at the current school before relocation. Be supportive by discussing all aspects of the move with your child.

Acquaint yourself with the location of hobbies and sports activities your child enjoys in order to provide an easier transition period. Many towns and cities have websites where you may find this information.

Do not pack school transcripts. Carry them with you.
