If your bank has branches worldwide or partners with banks in other countries, you will not need to move your accounts to a different bank.

Consult your bank's overseas representative for recommendations of banks and financial institutions if your bank does not do business in your destination country. Also, obtain information about currency exchange rates, letters of credit, transfer of funds, etc.

Close charge accounts and saving and checking accounts that you will not be using overseas.

If this is a company relocation, they may be able to help you with information on banks.

It is advisable to cut up your current credit cards and get new ones when you settle in your new country. You will have to pay for any difference in currency rate if you keep the old cards.

Contact an international accounting and consulting firm that has a department specializing in overseas planning for your financial and tax needs because you will have to deal with U.S. and foreign tax obligations since you will be an American citizen living overseas.
