Moving Your Computer

  • Backup all important data, files and programs and store them in a secure container.

  • Remove all diskettes, CD's and DVD's.

  • Close all Windows and Programs and shut down.

  • Unplug all power cables and then disconnect all other cables. As you disconnect each cable, label the cable ends and also the connector ports on the computer, printer, scanner, modem, etc. with a labelled piece of masking tape so you will be able to reconnect correctly.

  • Coil the cables carefully and fasten with an elastic.

  • Consult the computer and peripheral manuals for any special positioning for packing.

  • Pack all the components in the original boxes with the shaped styrofoam packing material if possible.

  • Pack the monitor extra carefully as it is heavy, fragile, and easily damaged.

  • If the original boxes and packing materials are not available, pack each unit separately in a slightly larger box, being careful to cushion all surfaces with lots of styrofoam pellets, bubble wrap or a large amount of crushed, clean packing paper.

  • Label all boxes with "Fragile - This End Up" labels, in addition to the color code and department and employee numbers you have been assigned.
