Moving Day - Moving Out

Record all utility meter readings (gas, electric, water).

Plan on spending the entire day at your house with the movers or designate a person to be in authority during your absence. Be sure that your chosen representative knows exactly what to do and which valuation liability program and amount you have selected since they may be asked to sign documents obligating you to charges. Don't leave until the movers have gone.

Hire a sitter for your children and put pets where they will not be in the way during loading and unloading.

Provide the driver with the new phone number and all other phone numbers where you can be reached while your shipment is in transit. Take the destination agent's name, address and telephone number with you.

Give the driver clear directions to your new home.

Review all paper work and details when the driver arrives.

Stay with the driver to oversee and check the inventory and inspection of furniture. Be sure you agree with notations about the condition of your furniture. Take photos if required.

Remain at home until the last item is packed. Make a final walk-through to make sure your house is completely empty. It is your responsibility to ensure all of your possessions are loaded.

Get routing information from the driver.

Leave your phone connected during moving day. After the movers leave, pack your phone in one of your suitcases for easy access upon arrival at your new location.

Lock all doors and windows. Give keys, alarm codes, garage door remote controls, manuals and instructions to the new owner or the real estate agent.
