6-8 Weeks Before Moving

Remember...organization and starting early will make your upcoming relocation a succesful one.

  • Contact the movers and confirm the scheduled date and time.

  • Remove all unwanted items from your garage, attic, basement, closets and storage shed. Plan a garage sale and contact a local charity for pickup of donations.

  • Return all borrowed items.

  • Contact insurance agents to transfer medical, property, fire and auto insurance.

  • Familiarize yourself with your new community. Request a new resident information package from the local Chamber of Commerce and Visitors & Convention Bureau. Get a mail subscription for a local newspaper in your new location to learn about its activities.

  • Begin collecting suitable moving and packing supplies if you are packing yourself. All boxes that you purchase from a moving supply company are specially designed to prevent any damage to your possessions. Using unusually sized boxes from other sources may not be strong enough to protect your belongings properly.

  • Create a floor plan of your new home and begin thinking about furniture arrangement in order to lessen the stress of making decisions when your furniture arrives.

  • Finalize all your real estate and rental needs.

  • Make travel arrangements including hotel, flights, car rental, etc. for your family, keeping your plan flexible in case of any scheduling delays or changes.

  • Obtain and place all medical, prescription, vaccination, and dental records in a safe and accessible place.

  • Notify schools in your old and new location and arrange for the transfer of school records. Begin the process of registering in new schools.

  • Plan to take all important documents, such as wills, stock certificates, and valuables such as photos, coin collection, etc. with you. Place the items in a labeled and easily accessible folder or a safety deposit box.

  • Discuss tax-related moving expenses, liabilities, and deductions with your tax advisor. Create a designated moving folder for all moving related expense receipts. Obtain an IRS Change of Address form, Form 8822, by calling (800) 829-1040 or visiting the IRS website at www.irs.gov where you will also be able to download and print form 8822 and most other IRS tax forms, e.g. Form 3903 to help deduct moving expenses.

  • If this is a company move, check with your employer to find out what moving expenses are covered.
