4-5 Weeks Before Moving

Obtain Change of Address forms from your local Post Office and check the postal service website at www.usps.com for useful information.

Mail Change of Address Forms to the following:

Friends and Family
Credit Card Companies
Clubs and Organizations
Doctors, Dentists and other service providers
Magazine and Newspaper subscriptions
Insurance Companies
Banks

Locate and obtain all automobile licensing and registration information for your new destination.

Complete banking arrangements in your old and new location. Transfer any necessary funds to your new bank.

Contact all current and new location utility companies (gas, water, electric, telephone, internet and cable TV) to set up connect and disconnect dates. Keep current utilities hooked up until your moving day.

Take a second look at your belongings and decide what can still be left behind such as old magazines and books, broken items and outgrown toys. The lighter your shipment means the less your move will cost.

Make organized lists of what items you will leave behind, the ones you will be moving yourself, and those that the movers will transport.

Decide who will do all or some of the packing. Remember that moving companies employ trained packers who know the best methods for keeping your possessions safe and secure.

Refer to "Packing Tips" if you will be doing most or all of the packing. Your moving company can provide further details about handling unusual and delicate items. Begin packing low priority items that are not frequently used.

Involve your children in some supervised packing to make the move fun for them. Have them create a layout design for their new bedroom.

Start using things up that you can't move, like cleaning supplies and frozen food.
