1 Week Before Moving

Settle any outstanding bills with local merchants.

Arrange for accepted method of payment to the moving company. Generally this will be cash on delivery (COD).

Verify the chosen insurance with your moving company. Refer to the "Insurance and Liability" sections of the Moving Guide.

Transfer or withdraw all funds from local banks.

Defrost refrigerator and freezer and clean the stove at least 24 hours before the move to allow them to air out. Leave a box of baking soda in the refrigerator to dispel odors.

Check your house for overlooked details including minor repairs.

Plan simple meals to avoid using appliances.

Have all appliances cleaned, disconnected and prepared for moving.

Notify the police if your old home will be unoccupied for a period of time after your move.

Arrange to have your lawn mowed one last time.

Gather keys, alarm codes, garage door openers, manuals and instructions for your current home to hand over to the new owner or the real estate agent.

Prepare items and pack the suitcases that you will need while your goods are in transit.

Confirm all travel arrangements, trying to keep plans as flexible as possible in the event of unexpected delays or schedule changes.

Separate cartons of valuables and luggage items you'll take with you so they don't get packed on the truck.

Clearly label items with "Fragile", "Do Not Load" and "Load Last" stickers.

Pack a box of items (clothes and toiletries) you will need immediately upon arrival at your new home and clearly label it "New Home" or "Load Last" or separate it from the rest of the boxes, label it "Do Not Load" and take it with you.

Do NOT disconnect your telephone until the day after loading.
