Moving The Family - Teenagers

Teenagers will have the most difficulty coping with the move. They have developed valuable friendships and will be very emotional about leaving their comfortable, secure environment. They will require constant support and reassurance. You should:
  • Clearly explain the reasons and benefits of moving
  • Keep them involved in all aspects of the move
  • Encourage them to research their new city to discover favorite activities they can participate in
  • Be available to listen to and be supportive of the stress they are experiencing
  • Get their input on choosing a moving time and the new house
  • Encourage them to say goodbye to their friends and to communicate with them by email or phone after moving
  • Invite former friends for a weekend sleep over
Most teens eventually come to terms with the move. However, if your teenager has a true conflict such as desperately wanting to finish out the school year because of special elective courses or playing on a sports team in order to earn a college scholarship, some compromise can always be arrived at. Allowing your teen to reside with relatives or a trusted friend's family is often a good solution. After living away from home for this period of time, teens are usually more than willing to return to the security of their family, even if it is in a new city.
