Moving Specific Types of Pets

Dogs and Cats

• can be moved by air or car
• before moving, keep the routine as normal as possible to avoid unnecessary stress
• provide adequate ventilation in the car
• never leave alone in a closed, parked car
• always use a leash at exercise or rest stops
• after arriving, allow your dog or cat to investigate the house, making sure all windows and doors are closed
• supervise all outings and restrict your dog or cat to the yard until familiar with the new surroundings
• dogs need to return to normal routines of eating and exercise as soon as possible

Birds

• have your veterinarian inspect the bird just before moving
• obtain a health certificate if moving to a state which requires one
• in some states, the health certificate expires within 10 days
• can be moved in its cage, preferably by car where the temperature can be controlled
• use a cage cover
• remove containers of food and water
• feed and water at regular times
• protect from drastic changes in temperature

Horses

• construct a stall to airline specifications
• obtain a health certificate before moving
• airline and USDA at destination airport will request to see health certificate

• must be registered with the Interstate Commerce
• obtain extra insurance
• excellent stress-free method
• expensive
• Road
• obtain necessary health certificates from your veterinarian for your destination state
• tow a horse trailer behind your car
• for overnight trips, book lodgings for your horse at registered stables
• feed and water as normal
• clean out trailer at overnight stops

Small Creatures

• rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, mice and ferrets can be moved in their cages, preferably by car
• remove water bottles
• feed and water as usual at rest stops
• provide adequate ventilation in the car
• protect from drastic changes in temperature

Reptiles

• research your destination state to find out what you may need before moving your reptile
• your local pet store can give advice on how to safely transport your reptile

Fish
