Moving Pets - General Information

Because many pets are extremely sensitive to any disruption of routine and environment, moving can be a stressful and frightening time for them. Relocating pets takes thoughtful organization and planning.

Pets can not be moved by moving van. Trains and buses usually allow only seeing-eye dogs.

Items to obtain before moving

destination state and city pet laws and regulations
ID tags
complete physical examination, update all inoculations and vaccinations
health records

Items to pack

food and treats
food and water dishes
leash/harness
grooming comb/brush
favorite toy or blanket
newspapers or litter box
spray cleaner and paper towels
medications

Moving by car

use a properly-sized regulation pet crate or cage for safety reasons
feed and water two hours before leaving
bring a favorite toy along
always use a leash when stopping for an exercise or rest stop break

Moving by air

contact your airline for rules and regulations pertaining to the transportation of pets
inquire about all charges and insurance rates
your veterinarian can advise you further on moving your pet by air
