It is extremely important to make sure that your possessions are adequately insured before you move.

All licensed movers are legally liable for any loss or damage that occurs during any transportation of your household goods and all related services identified on your mover's lawful bill of lading. However, there are different levels of liability, and you should be aware of the amount of protection provided and the charges for each option.

Basically, most movers offer different levels of liability under the terms of their tariffs and the Surface Transportation Board's Released Rates Orders which govern the moving industry. It is important that you fully understand what each option means before choosing.

People regularly make bad choices when it comes to moving insurance because they are not well informed. All moving companies are required to provide you with information on what it will cost you to place a value on your shipment. In the event of loss or damage, you are still required to pay the mover on the completion of the move. You have 9 months to file a claim. The mover is required to respond within 30 days. The issue must be resolved within 120 days. If arbitration is chosen to resolve the issue and you are not satisfied with the outcome of the arbitration process, you may sue for damages. These conditions may vary slightly from state to state.
